Why do many of the world’s most respected collectors smoke Will Purdy’s pipes? For the same reason one rarely sees a Purdy pipe on the estate market. Aside from their originality, beauty, and workmanship, they are crafted to articulate a precise rendition of the tobacco's taste.

Like the best chefs, the best pipe makers insist on the best ingredients. Each Will Purdy pipe is crafted from an Italian briar block that was first aged in Italy for eight or more years, then aged seven more years in the dry, high-altitude air of the Colorado Rocky Mountain foothills. Stems are hand cut from German ebonite.

Purdy’s 4 mm block-drilling opens gradually in the stem, then transforms into a deep V-opening at the button, ensuring integrity in the smoke-stream flow. Purdy’s stem work is not only functionally impeccable, but also comfortable and durable.

Purdy’s best-known original shapes – garlic, alchemist, tadpole, bullcano, and blob – were developed from repeatedly found grain patterns within briar blocks. Though every pipe shape is immediately recognizable, Purdy’s allegiance to each block’s singular grain structure makes every pipe unique. These shapes have the potential to become classics in their own right.

Likewise, when you look at how Purdy renders his classic shapes, you’ll recognize the bloodlines of their ancestors. His belges, zulus, authors, apples, and billiards are unmistakably contemporary, yet authoritatively classical. There is a persistent understatement in Purdy’s work. He never makes a pipe more extravagant than it should be.

The graceful, organic lines of Purdy’s pipes – original or classic – belie an obsessive, perfectionist disposition that endows each pipe with equal measures of precision and affection. To see a Purdy from every angle imaginable is to discover the kind of lyrical fluidity that a river endows on granite as the water alternately grinds and caresses the rock’s facets. - Courtesy of Neill Archer Roan
