I love it when Paul Hubbart plays around in the workshop; I can imagine him really having fun with this piece. What we have here is a rather whimsical take on the Ballerina, with squat proportions and a paneled bowl and shank. Nick has dubbed it "The Panelrina." The shape is charged with energy and forward momentum. The straight/flame grain that adorns the bowl is very nice, all the better for being displayed in a beautiful natural finish. This pipe was cut from an exceptionally clean piece of briar. As nice as the vertical grain is, the swirling pool of birdseye on the rim is even better. A self-confessed birdseye junkie, I can say without any hesitation that this pipe has it in spades: even, perfectly spaced, defined...simply mesmerizing. What a beautiful view to have when smoking! One thing- this pipe does not sit. But all else considered, who gives a woob? Highly recommended.
