David WagnerWhy does he carve pipes?
He is fascinated by the archaic shapes of tobacco pipes which are one of the oldest sculptures of human beings. And he likes the simplicity and complexity at the same time, which all good pipes have in common.
He has learned his craft from Franz von Matt in Switzerland, Rainer Barbi in Germany & Josef Prammer in Austria.
His workshop is situated near the Lake Traunsee in the Salzkammergut region. David carves between 100 and 120 tobacco pipes each year by hand from briar root (erica arborea).
